Luke was a pretty straight forward read, and I enjoyed reading this particular account more so than the others. Many questions were raises when I was reading through the book. One question that really caught my attention was in regards to the Jesus’s genealogy. I find it weird how they are placed right in the middle of a story, but I guess there is a method to the madness. While trying to find a question it became clear that Matthew and Luke give two different genealogy accounts. I find that to be very odd, so my question is why do Matthew and Luke gicve two different genealogy accounts?

 

 

While digging through various sites I found something interesting. According to the website:  (http://carm.org/bible-difficulties/matthew-mark/why-are-there-different-genealogies-jesus-matthew-1-and-luke-3); the reason for the different accounts basically comes between Jesus’s parents. One lineage is for joseph, and the other is the lineage of Mary. This is weird to me because many times family genealogy are drawn from the male, and not the female. Nevertheless, I still think it’s interesting that Luke genealogy uses Mary lineage, and not a distant male cousin.

 

 

 

One other thing that the previous site did not make clear is why the lineage appeared to be so long? Apparently if the previous website is right about Mary the writer of this book went back many generations that pre-date the lineage in Matthew. The website: http://www.theology.edu/ap10.htm points out that Matthew’s genealogy traces it from Abraham to Jesus. This line is only fourty-two generations long. So this is another reason why Luke’s genealogy passage is vastly different from Matthew. According to the site hyperlinked in this paragraph the genealogy passage in Luke traces more than seventy generations which started with Adam! Talk about knowing your roots; Mary’s line was vast and apparently so important the writer of this book sought to point that out.
